May the Fourth Be With You

May the Fourth Be With You

When communities create content… and a day of celebration!

Every May 4th is a special day for fans of the saga created by George Lucas. This tradition originated in the 1970s. Whether it is called Star Wars Day, Star Wars Day or “May the 4th Be With You”, May 4th has a special symbolism for Star Wars fans. It is one of the saga’s must-attend events for audiences of all generations.

The “May the 4th Be With You” was set up in reference to the famous line “May the Force Be With You”. The pun was first used in the English newspaper The London Evening News on May 4, 1979, to wish Margaret Thatcher, then just elected to lead the country, a good start to her term: “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations”. In 2008, an unofficial Facebook page of Star Wars fans was created in tribute to May 4, entitled “Luke Skywalker Day”. And it wasn’t until 2013 that Lucasfilm added May the Fourth Be With You to its official calendar of intergalactic celebrations. For 2021, it was celebrated with, among other things, the airing of the first episode of The Bad Batch, the saga’s new animated series on Disney+. Usually, Star Wars fans celebrate on social networks this special day with #MayThe4thBeWithYou and #StarWarsDay. And since the sudden death of Carrie Fisher in December 2016, fans have also been paying tribute to the actress every May 4.
